Attorney advertising

Whiteford, Taylor & Preston L.L.P. publishes this website for people who want to learn about its tax controversy and tax defense practice. Many states consider these pages attorney advertising. They offer information of general interest to the public, not legal advice about any particular situation or problem.

Please do not choose a lawyer on the strength of advertising alone. We encourage you to look further into any attorney before you hire one.

Prior results and testimonials

Every matter turns on its own facts and law. Prior results described on this site, and testimonials from clients or colleagues, do not guarantee or predict a similar outcome in any other matter.

The articles, guides, FAQs, videos, the Tax Fraud Tracker and everything else on this site are general information. Please do not act, or decide not to act, on anything you read here without first getting advice from a lawyer about your own circumstances.

No attorney-client relationship

Reading this site, calling or emailing us, or submitting a form does not make you a client, and we do not intend to create an attorney-client relationship by offering this information. That relationship begins only when Whiteford agrees in writing to represent you, after a conflict check, usually through a signed engagement letter.

Please do not send confidential information yet

To avoid conflicts of interest, please do not send us confidential information through this site, such as the details of an IRS examination, a criminal investigation or your finances, until you have spoken with a Whiteford attorney and been told it is appropriate to send it. Information you send before then may not be protected by the attorney-client privilege.

Summaries of government enforcement actions

The Tax Fraud Tracker and our news pages summarize enforcement actions that government agencies have announced publicly, such as Department of Justice press releases. Charges are allegations. Every defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. Summarizing an announcement does not adopt the government's characterizations of it, and unless we say otherwise, Whiteford is not involved in the matters described.

Where our attorneys practice

Whiteford attorneys are admitted in the jurisdictions shown on their individual profiles. We do not offer legal services in any jurisdiction where the attorney handling the matter is not admitted or otherwise authorized to practice.

Accuracy and timeliness

Tax law and enforcement priorities change quickly. We work to keep this site current but cannot promise that any page reflects the law or the facts as of the moment you read it.
